Many ineligible business owners do not feel the 8a program is fair as it give lucrative set-aside contracts to a select few businesses. What these business owners are failing t consider is that small business in America is the foundation for our countries economic future. Having effective small businesses is about unleashing the power of diversity. A homogenous group of people owning all of the small businesses in America will lead to a very shallow talent pool and not be good for the country in the long-term. This will lead to missed opportunities to cater products and services in the global marketplace. Therefore the SBA’s 8a certification program is employed by congress to help small disadvantaged businesses survive and flourish. For America to remain strong we need new groups entering America to be given opportunities to build and develop successful small businesses while becoming business leaders.
Providing opportunities for diversity is critical to shorten the time frame of assimilation of cultural groups as well. If capital for small businesses is not available in the open market historically these ethnic groups have banded together to provide opportunities to other group members. This process is not possible if the group is without business leaders to help the ethnic or cultural group progress. This is where the 8a program steps in and helps provide a catalyst that helps to solve this problem. Instead of providing a handout to these groups business opportunity is given leading to a more productive economic system. |
